Reports, Updates, and Informational Items

  • Work Plan for School Improvement
Mr. Tomlinson and Mrs. Buss shared the process the JH staff has undergone to make a plan for school improvement. The last SIP day was very productive as the teachers worked together to assist in developing the plan. The plan is a part of a grant that would provide $34,000 for the school to spend toward professional development and instructional resources during the spring and summer of 2019.

  • Benchmark Screening Reports
Mr. Tomlinson shared benchmark screening data showing strong progress in the area of math achievement for the first semester of this year. Mr. Fairchild and Mrs. Buss shared an overview of winter screening data demonstrating elementary students are well on their way to meeting the math learning goals set for their students.

  • Facilities Planning Update
Mr. Kurz shared the progress toward the development of a long-term facility plan. Work is being done in many areas, but the next big step will be to hire an architecht to begin determining a range of options for the JH Campus. The district will need to spend more than $4 million over the next few years to maintain current facilities. Information is being gathered to determine what potential costs for an addition to the JH campus, or rebuilding a new JH on the same campus might cost. The Board is learning about the range of options with the goal of building a long-term district facilities plan.

  • Citizens Advisory Council
The CAC met last week and discussed the assessment of farmland, digital learning days, timeline regarding facility planning, and handbook revisions.

Board Meeting Discussions

  • Illinois State High School Clay Target League
The Board discussed the potential for this extracurricular program for students. They agreed it was too short a timeline to add the program for the spring of 2019, but will continue to learn about it for the spring of 2020.

  • Work Plan for School Improvement
EPG Junior High school qualified for a grant to support student learning. The staff has worked together over the past few weeks assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the school and determining some ways to use the grant funds to support student learning.

  • School Calendar
Mr. Kurz shared the districts’ students will make up 5 of the 6 canceled days. Students’ last day of attendance this year will be June 4th. The Teacher Institute will be on June 5th. He shared he has been gathering feedback from the district staff and will present a recommended calendar to the Board of Education in March.
