Reports, Updates, and Informational Items

  • Start of School: Principals recognized their staff and all the work that went into a successful first day of school.

  • Board Goal Reporting Timeline: Mr. Kurz shared a template of when the administrative team plans to provide updates on progress toward Board Goals throughout the course of the 2018-19 school year. As a part of that reporting, administrators discussed the School Improvement Goals related to math instruction in each building. Principals commended their teaching staff as they discussed professional development, instructional practices, curriculum review and assessment writing that is underway in an effort to improve math learning. There will be a report on K-4 fall benchmark screening results at the September meeting. In October there will be a report on fall benchmark screening in grades 5-8.

  • Capital Project Savings Plan: The Board is working on developing a savings plan in order to proactively prepare for the work that will take place in the next few years improving EPG Junior High facilities. The next step in determining what needs to be done is to gather information from the community about what they believe the long-term plan should be to improve the Junior High Campus in Gridley. While that process is taking place, the Board is taking a proactive approach to saving now for the work to be done in the future. The Board has dedicated three revenue sources for the Capital Development Fund (60): Livingston County Sales Tax, Woodford County Sales Tax, and Gridley TIF Dollars. This money is being saved to use as a part of the long-term plan to upgrade the Junior High Campus. There were no expenses paid out of this fund during the 2017-18 school year, and none in the Tentative Budget for the 2018-19 school year. This fund will be used to save for future capital projects. This is an effort on behalf of the Board to provide transparency in fiscal planning.

Board Meeting Discussions

  • Tentative Budget: Mr. Kurz presented the FY19 Tentative Budget to the Board. He noted that this budget is probably a bit low on revenues and a bit high on expenses, though total revenue does exceed expenditures by more than $500,000. He believes if the administrative team watches spending closely, they will be able to end FY19 about $100,000 under budget Education Fund expenditures.

  • Board Retreat: The Board of Education decided to set the annual Board Retreat for Saturday, January 26th from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

  • EPG Community Night: The Board set the date for EPG Community Night for October 30th from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the Junior High Gym. All members of the district are invited to attend. People will be seated around tables to participate in a structured feedback session to learn about perceptions of the district. Specifically, attendees will be asked to share their suggestions and recommendations regarding a long-term plan for improving the Junior High Campus.

  • Negotiated Agreement: Mr. Kurz and the Board commended the hard work, positive working relationship, and healthy dialogue with the El Paso Gridley Education Association bargaining team. The Association approved the contract proposal earlier in the day on the 20th. The 3-year agreement does away with the salary schedule and provides a 3% per year increase in each individual’s salary.
